           Better Late Than Never!

You may have noticed that our June Newsletter is arriving a little later than usual. Our outstanding administrative assistant, Lisa, recently underwent surgery and spent several stressful days at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. We are grateful for the Lord's watchful care over her and pleased to report that she is recovering well. We appreciate your prayers, patience, and understanding during this time.

Since our newsletter was delayed, it provides us a wonderful opportunity to report on the recent Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting held in Orlando, Florida, on June 9-10.

What an encouraging time it was for Southern Baptists! One of the highlights for many of us was the election of Dr. Willy Rice, pastor of Calvary Church in Clearwater, Florida, as the new President of the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Rice was elected by a strong majority of the messengers and will serve as the chief representative of our nation's largest Protestant denomination. We especially rejoice because Dr. Rice was our featured speaker at the Taylor Baptist Association Annual Meeting last October. It is exciting to see one of Florida's own serving in this important leadership role. His emphasis on biblical faithfulness, denominational cooperation, and renewed focus on the Great Commission as a missionary Baptist resonated with messengers throughout the convention.

The Taylor Baptist Association was well represented in Orlando with more than twenty messengers attending from our churches. Thank you to every pastor and messenger who invested their time and resources to participate in the work of our convention. Southern Baptists remain a convention of churches working together to accomplish far more collectively than any one church could accomplish alone.

Several reports reminded us why it is such a privilege to be a Southern Baptist. We celebrated the appointment of new International Mission Board missionaries who are carrying the Gospel to the nations. Reports also highlighted encouraging increases in baptisms across Southern Baptist life as well as continued church planting efforts through the North American Mission Board. These reports remind us that despite challenges in our culture, God is still saving people, churches are still reaching communities, and the Gospel is still advancing around the world.

One of the most significant actions taken by the convention was the approval of the Truth and Unity Amendment. The amendment received approximately 75% support from the messengers, exceeding the required two-thirds majority. The amendment now moves forward for a second vote next year. The purpose of the amendment is to further clarify that Southern Baptist churches align their practice of pastoral leadership with biblical teaching regarding the office of pastor. Regardless of where one may stand on every aspect of convention discussion, the overwhelming vote demonstrated a strong desire among Southern Baptists to remain closely aligned with the authority of God's Word.

As we sat among thousands of messengers from across America, I was reminded once again of the blessing of being part of a missionary people. Together we continue to fulfill our Lord's command: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19).

May God continue to bless our churches as we work together to reach Taylor County, Florida, North America, and the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
